SAP on Google Cloud, with HANA backups straight to Cloud Storage

The challenge

TELPP had no existing infrastructure to support SAP on Google Cloud. Its sites span Singapore and Jakarta, with the primary site chosen for low latency and disaster recovery in Jakarta. The brief was to implement SAP using only virtual machine workloads, keep the design simple to avoid redundant cost, and send SAP HANA backups directly to Cloud Storage using native SAP functions.

What we did

• Deployed SAP-certified virtual machines matched to the required CPU type and machine count
• Ran the database in VMs on SLES for SAP, with SAP HANA as the supporting database
• Used Cloud Storage as the object store for the implementation
• Configured the SAP-certified Backint agent so SAP HANA backups go directly to Cloud Storage
• Provided assessment, solution design, a proof of concept, and production implementation support

The results

• SAP on Google Cloud successfully established
• Minimum latency across all site locations
• SAP HANA backing up directly to Google Cloud object storage
